The Civil War is freshly over, the Transcontinental Railroad is stealing headlines as work finally begins, and many thousands of good folk from all over are heading West from the Mississippi for just as many reasons. Whether it's gold, opportunity, the past, the war, or anything else that drives people from home, most people end up finding something far different once they hit the vast plains and cold mountains. A few of them even settled in a quaint little town nestled in a valley near the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming.
Inheritance it was named, by Simon Montefiore some years ago when he and his Pa laid claim to the land. The town was fairly well situated right by a fork in the Wind River with a smaller estuary that bled down into a tiny lake, creatively named Inheritance Lake by the Montefiore family as well. A well-traveled road was laid down through here that came north from South Pass City and continued on toward Yellowstone. People of all types came through here, though the going could be a bit tough through the Pass. A bridge was built over the Wind River near the edge of the valley (once again by the Montefiores). Soon thereafter, Simon built a saloon right in the center of that valley. Eventually cowboys from further south heard tell of the bridge here over the Wind River and started driving their herds right past the town that was beginning to spring up. With the cowboys came other business and soon enough Inheritance was on the map.
But that was a long time ago. These days, the Montefiore family is all but gone. Simon's grandson still lives in the estate up river from town, but he is old and doesn't get out much. The town has fallen on desperate times as more and more families moved on when the herds stopped passing by. Better roads that avoided the South Pass had been built, the roads that beckoned most people to California did not pass through here, and the Civil War, though far away, did its own kind of damage on the people as well. Inheritance isn't on that map anymore. Another ghost of the prairie, fading away.
Or is it? Recently, some have begun to find this little town in the valley, lost to time and history. It's buildings need some new timber and a coat of paint, the road through town needs repair, and that ol' bridge up the way is in sorry shape. But where some see a dead old skeleton marring the otherwise tranquil valley, others see opportunity. A fresh start, a new home, a business to start in on, and new people to know. Everyone has their own reasons for resettling here so it won't do to speculate, but some folk like a challenge. Hard work gets them out of bed in the morning instead of keeping them in it. To hardy people like that, there may not be anything better in the world than a chance to build a home, a family, and a life of their own choosing in a beautiful valley away from the pain of the past or the squalor of a city.
Welcome, my friends, to Inheritance!
This is an Old West roleplay set just after the Civil War. As you can see, this is entirely a fictitious town with fictitious people, but it still belongs in the Historical section as we won't be doing too much with interjecting fantasy in it, or sci-fi (looking at you, Cowboys & Aliens). Also, placing it here means we'll try our best to be as historically accurate as we can without overburdening ourselves too much. What does that mean? Well, if you aren't super familiar with the time period, it would benefit you greatly by doing some research into the finer details. You'll want to depict your character's story, appearance, mannerisms, and everything else as accurately as you can. Are we all perfect? No. But the goal is to try.
The story is teased a little here at the start of this post. In plain terms, it is quite simple: We are rebuilding the town of Inheritance. You're character will need a reason for wanting to be a part of that and a profession to undertake in order to make a living. Remember, realism is the goal. So maybe your character purchased the Saloon and has to run that, maybe you fell into or built a ranch outside of town and are raising cattle, perhaps your character is a Saloon girl, maybe a blacksmith looking for a town without someone boasting those skills. There are many ways you can go, but the idea is to carve out your own niche. As you'll see here when I post my character, he's the new Sheriff.
So that job is taken, though I'd like to sign on a deputy if your keen. For everything else, I'll include a "job board" here in the post to give everyone some inspiration. For now, let's limit it to two characters per player and you'll need to sell me on why you'd like to do the two. If you want to do something not on the list, that's awesome! Just let me know and I'll add you. Eventually we'll fill the unwanted roles with NPCs.
Other than that, I don't have many guidelines to impose. This isn't in the Mature section, so lets keep everything PG-13. Some swearing is fine, violence, and of course some tasteful romance. However anything too explicit or graphic isn't permitted. As a rule of thumb, use "boot scenes" for sex (like in a movie when they got to bed kissing and the screen fades to black before coming back, focused on the man's boots with a bra draped over them).
